in dreams like death

if a day could last forever would we still wish for tomorrow?
those soft moments of sorrow without a yesterday to retreat to?
in tenser days we wouldn't care if love was lost up in the air
we'd laugh and say, "next time you wake a new heart will be beating"
so why protect what cannot die? why say words you know are lies?
my tongue it moves despite my eyes they're screaming
so let us laugh, so let this spit spill down our shirts with caution lit
we'll pray to God to keep us like stray animals
don't forget to wash your hands, break a leg and make a stand
forget the stories that your mother told you
there is no fair, our hearts are bored
as they drained our feelings poured out across the oceans
and settled on their floors
and now i craft a thousand words none of which i've ever heard
they simply come to me in dreams like death
alive and kept aside waiting for more
